It may sound crazy, but I still have a vivid memory of my granddad’s Old Spice aftershave whisping past my nose. At the time I was only six-years-old, but I remember wanting to try it on so I could emulate his bravado. My granddad was a man’s man, the one who would win all the amusement park games, the one who everyone knew or wanted to know because he was a natural protector of his community and simply a good man. I figured if I could have an inkling of his ways (or at least smell like him), I too would be the man.
My dear granddad is no longer with us, and thankfully I’ve managed to secure an ounce of his ways (especially working with my hands), but I carry a bit of him every time every time I wear cologne and practice good grooming habits like shaving, washing my face, and cutting my hair.
More recently, Deena murmured about me smelling a bit rugged to say the least—I like to call it man-musk, but she’s the beauty girl so I took heed. I turned to my go-to products (Suave, Bath and Body works, and yes, even Palmer’s cocoa butter), but then we received a package filled to the brim with new Old Spice products and a tote bag. I’m not sure if Deena had anything to do with it, but the timing was uncanny. Oddly enough, I was thinking of granddad Arrington’s dapper ways at almost the exact time the bag arrived. Unreal.
Now contrary to popular belief, Old Spice isn’t musky anymore; it’s actually pretty good. Aftershave aside, I’m liking the Steel Courage deodorant, and I’m diving into the body washes this week (more on that later) but honestly, it’s the nostalgia that has me sold. It smells like a modern version of my granddad, which, in my mind, is just like me. And, anything that puts me closer to his ways is a total win in my book.
