When I was a beauty editor for Allure and Essence magazines, one of my biggest gripes was the lack of skin care lines for women of color. Every day I was inundated with the industry’s supposedly “best” products for skin, but there were only a handful for women of color. It might sound trivial, but it really mattered to me. Imagine my delight when I heard about Urban Skin Rx, a line developed specifically for darker tones. Its founder and medical aesthetician, Rachel Roff, isn’t Black, but she’s the truth and she understands darker colored skin.
Let’s take sunblock for instance. Most contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that can turn darker skin a chalky gray color that leaves WOC not wanting to wear sunblock for fear of looking like a ghost. But that’s not the case with Urban Skin Rx.
For starters, the Urban Skin Rx DermShield All Skin Sun Protection Daily Moisturizer SPF 30, is not only ideal for combination and oily skin types due to its mattifying properties, but it’s translucent even on the darkest skin tones.
There’s also the Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Cleansing Bar and Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Night Treatment that contain skin lightening ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, alpha arbutin and niacinimide which should produce results in as little as a few weeks. “It is important to not just apply skin lighteners to the dark spots as this can produce a light mark around the dark spot,” says Roff. “I recommend my patients to alternate every other day with a full face application and a spot application.”
The cleansing bar (which is my favorite) is also great for traveling because there’s a reusable sponge enclosed. One thing is for sure—I’ll be taking Urban Skin Rx with me on my summer travels. Check out the line and let me know what you think.
